No Laureus Award for Tadej Pogačar

In contrast, another cycling star came away empty-handed: Tadej Pogačar. The professional road cyclist from UAE Team Emirates - XRG was unable to win the prestigious "Sportsman of the Year" category. Instead, victory went to Swedish pole vaulter Armand "Mondo" Duplantis, who won gold at the Olympic Games in Paris and the European Championships.

The US gymnast Simone Biles, who won three gold medals in Paris, came out on top in the Sportswoman of the Year category. In addition to Pogačar, who was the only cyclist nominated for the main category, Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, Dutch Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen and French swimmer Léon Marchand Duplantis were also beaten. Despite his outstanding performances in the 2024 season, in which Pogačar won the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France and the road race at the World Cycling Championships, among others, it was not enough for the Slovenian to take the top honour.
