Horror: Death after a supposedly harmless fall
They found him alone in the forest: last week, a 39-year-old mountain biker crashed so badly on the Isar trails in Munich that he died of his internal injuries that evening.

Not much is known. But that little is enough to know: It was a tragic accident. As the police reported last week, passers-by found a mountain biker who had apparently fallen in the woods near Pullach, south of Munich, at around 12:05 on Tuesday 15 October 2019. As the cyclist had a laceration to his head, the passers-by immediately called the police on 110. The injured man was then immediately flown by rescue helicopter to a hospital in Munich for emergency medical treatment.

Initial investigations revealed that the mountain biker was a 39-year-old man from Munich who was travelling on the so-called "Isartrail Grünwaldrunde" in this wooded area west of the Isar. Virtually nothing is known about the circumstances of the accident. The police accident investigation team say it was a fall when landing after jumping over a jump about one metre high on a slight incline. There are no indications that the accident was caused by someone else.

According to the latest information, the injured cyclist was conscious and kneeling on the ground when passers-by arrived at the scene of the accident. He was unable to give any details about the course of the accident, as he had no memory of it. Because he had a bleeding wound on his head, the emergency doctor was called, who also took the patient to the emergency room with suspected head injuries.

At the hospital, the all-clear was given: the head injuries were less serious than feared - the biker was wearing a helmet when he crashed. Unfortunately, the doctors discovered internal injuries to his kidneys and lungs that were so severe that the patient died on Wednesday night. Our sympathy goes out to his relatives.

Sebastian Brust was born in 1979 and was originally socialised on his grandmother's folding bike, but has mainly been riding studded tyres since his fifth birthday. Loves all kinds of bikes - and merging with nature. Believes that disc brakes are much safer today than they were 15 years ago and thinks he has helped with his brake and pad tests. However, the trained vehicle technology engineer very much regrets that the bicycle industry is orientating itself on what he considers to be the wrong ideals of the car industry. At BIKE, he corrects, produces and organises digital content on the website.
