"So I climbed down the ridge for maybe thirty metres. I wanted to repeat the last phase of the ascent, but this time without a safety rope and with the Santa Cruz over my shoulder. I balanced myself, peered once more into the abyss below me with a slightly uneasy feeling and then radioed Stu. "I'm going to take a quick break."

The walkie-talkie crackled and crackled instantly. It was Stu who answered me, his voice sounding quite stressed. "Man, just stay on the rope!"

I carefully pushed myself forwards and tested the rock with my hands and feet for loose boulders that could fall. The ridge really wasn't a metre wide, but I felt pretty safe. "This place is fine," I shouted to Stu, "the rope is just holding me back..."

I unplugged and began the ascent..."
