A comparison of mini padlocks
We compared six compact bike locks, ranging from Abus to Zefal and costing between 13 and 40 euros. The models were assessed on the basis of ease of use and security. All the models tested feature a combination lock, but there are clear differences in how they are operated.
Two locks secure the bicycle using a thin coiled cable. Four other models use metal-reinforced straps based on the principle of a lockable cable tie. The sheathing protects the frame and wheels from scratches. At the same time, the straps differ significantly in terms of length, flexibility and durability.
Operation via a combination lock
A good mini padlock can be operated quickly and intuitively, even during a short break. The numbers must click into place smoothly and be easy to read. With some models, this is no problem at all. Others require almost watchmaker’s precision, because the number wheels are stiff to turn or it is difficult to set the desired combination exactly.
Handling is particularly important when it comes to small padlocks. If the padlock has to be fumbled out of your pocket, untangled and then locked – a fiddly process – you’ll soon find yourself leaving it at home in everyday life. User-friendly models therefore stand out thanks to their smooth-turning number discs and a lock that clicks into place securely.
Safety for short stops
Mini locks are an additional anti-theft measure, not a substitute for a heavy U-lock or chain lock. They are best used for short stops where the bike remains in sight. They can act as a deterrent against a quick grab by an opportunistic thief. However, many models offer only limited resistance to professional tools.
Some cable locks, such as Knipex and similar brands, give way even under light pressure. Others, however, offer a surprisingly strong defence against theft. Metal-reinforced cables generally offer greater resistance than simple coiled cables, but are often less flexible and shorter.

The Acid Ratch This product from Cube’s range of accessories offers excellent value for money and has therefore been awarded the ‘Best Value’ recommendation. The metal-reinforced strap provides effective protection against being cut through. The combination lock locks into place smoothly, and the numbers remain clearly visible even in low light.
The only drawback is its short length of 50 centimetres. This means the strap is barely long enough to secure two bikes together. However, it is usually sufficient for a single road bike or gravel bike locked to a fixed bike rack.
