Fizik is relaunching its Ferox off-road shoe. The second generation combines a revised fit with a full-carbon sole. A special edition is being released in the colours of the East African Team Amani.

Editor’s conclusion

The real innovation of the Ferox 2 lies in its redesigned last, featuring a reduced heel-to-toe drop and a wider toe box, which takes account of the changed riding positions on modern trail bikes. The combination of a wider carbon plate, a robust hybrid fastening system and water-repellent material represents a practical evolution of its predecessor.

A new direction for gravel and cross-country

With the Ferox 2 Carbon, accessories manufacturer Fizik presents the revamped version of its racing shoe, designed for use on gravel bikes as well as in cross-country and cyclo-cross. In addition to the standard version, the model is available as a special edition Team Amani on offer. The colour scheme and patterns are inspired by traditional East African weaving techniques and pay homage to the cycling team of the same name from the region.

Revised anatomy and enlarged toe box

The most noticeable change compared with its predecessor concerns the fit. According to the manufacturer, the shoe’s design has been adapted to more modern frame geometries and changes in riding position on the bike. The Ferox 2 features a straighter axis, a larger toe box and a reduced drop (sole incline). These adjustments are designed to provide more space for the foot and increase stability on the pedal.

Two-part fastening system

Fizik uses a two-part system to secure the foot:

  • Airprene bootie and power strap: An integrated sock-like upper (bootie) made from perforated Airprene wraps around the foot. A wide Velcro fastening (Powerstrap) across the instep is designed to secure the foot even at high cadences, whilst also acting as a robust safeguard against the fastening coming undone accidentally in the event of a fall.
  • BOA Li2 in the forefoot: Fine adjustment at the front is carried out using a single BOA Li2 twist lock.

Water-repellent outer fabric

The upper is made from a PU-laminated mesh fabric, which is divided into different functional zones. Whilst the mesh provides ventilation, the PU layers reinforce areas subject to wear and tear. The design is engineered to repel water, ensuring the shoe does not gain any extra weight in wet conditions or mud.

Stiff carbon sole with tread pattern

The underside features the newly developed X1 full-carbon outsole, which is specified as having a stiffness index of 10. The carbon plate is slightly wider and flatter to increase the contact area with the pedal. For running sections, the sole is fitted with a rubber tread pattern throughout – including the midfoot area.
