Whether you’re a man or a woman – for most mountain bike products, it doesn’t matter – but for many, it does. We’ve picked out six products for female mountain bikers.

For a long time, the principle in cycling was simply: paint it pink and you’re done. Fortunately, the industry has learnt its lesson. After all, women are anatomically built differently to men – and that makes a real difference when it comes to mountain biking.

Wider hips, a different pelvic floor, a shorter torso – all of these factors influence how a saddle fits, how a protector provides protection, or how a pair of trousers moves with you. A men’s model simply doesn’t fit automatically. You’ll notice this after three hours on the trail at the latest – and in places where you’d rather not notice it.

The good news is that more and more manufacturers are genuinely taking women into account when designing their products – and not just when it comes to the colour range. We’ve put together some exciting items for you: from saddles and protectors to cycling shorts.

6 items for female mountain bikers

These items are designed specifically for women.

Chest and back protector

When it comes down to it, a chest and back protector is a must. There are plenty of models available, but hardly any designed specifically for women. The Leatt Chest Protector 3DF AirFit EVO Women's It’s exactly that – designed specifically for women, with extra comfort at the front. Top: The protectors meet Safety Level 2. Price: 179 euros >> Available here at a reduced price.

Helmet

When it comes to choosing a helmet, women tend to focus more on the design than on specific models. The Modrop by Abus It’s available in pink – but also in a range of other colour combinations. A nice feature: the ponytail opening at the back. It also comes with the MIPS safety feature, a height-adjustable visor and much more. Price: 129.95 euros >> Available here at a reduced price*.

Bib shorts

Bib shorts are designed to make long trail rides more bearable and protect your bum. The SQlab SQ-Short One 12 Women's came out on top in our test. The thin, firm and securely positioned seat pad ensures comfort – and it makes toilet breaks a breeze too. Unfortunately, it’s expensive. Price: 200 euros >> available here.

Trail trousers

The new brand Raphroxs specialises in MTB clothing for women. Its best-seller: the Women's MTB Trousers – Available in 14 sizes. Stretch fabric, plenty of pockets and water-repellent material make them a real all-rounder. BIKE tester Barbara has been putting the trousers through their paces – and is thoroughly impressed. Saddle

Every bum is different. And women’s bums are quite different from men’s anyway. That’s why a special saddle can often help if you experience uncomfortable pressure between your legs. The ergonomics experts at Ergon have the SM Women Developed. The saddle is available in two sizes. Price: 79.95 euros >> Available here at a reduced price.
