The manufacturers ION and SQlab are introducing a new sizing system for knee pads which, for the first time, takes into account not only leg circumference but also body height.
A key factor in the protective effectiveness of protective gear in cycling is a correct fit. If the protective gear slips out of place under strain or during a fall, it ceases to fulfil its function. Conventional size charts for protective equipment are generally based solely on the circumference of the limbs. The accessory manufacturers ION and SQlab have now revised this approach for their product ranges.
The newly introduced system, called ‘Adaptive Sizing’, adds a further dimension to the usual standard sizes (S to XL). Whilst the circumference of the leg continues to determine the width of the protector, the length of the protector is now defined by the wearer’s overall height. According to the manufacturer, this differentiation is intended to better accommodate the varying body shapes and leg lengths of people with the same thigh circumference.
SQlab draws on its expertise in the field of ergonomics. To determine the correct size, a standard measuring tape or a specific template provided by the manufacturer can be used. In addition to the dimensions, the geometry of the integrated protective padding has also been adapted to ensure a better fit around the knee joint during movement.
