More protection, less bulk: How Leatt aims to strike a balance with its protective gear

​Protective clothing specialist Leatt is expanding its range of protective gear with the 6.0 Evo series. The three new knee protectors and one elbow protector are designed to combine a high level of protection with comfort.

In practice, protective gear often faces acceptance issues: uncomfortable fits and overheating can lead to riders taking them off or not wearing them in the first place. To counter this, Leatt promises a particularly slim, flexible design for its 6.0 Evo collection. According to the manufacturer, the protectors should be able to be worn discreetly under clothing without restricting freedom of movement.

The new Leatt range comprises three types of knee protectors and one elbow protector. A key feature is certification to the CE Level 2 standard, which guarantees a high level of impact absorption. According to the relevant EU testing standard EN 1621-1, there are only two protection levels for knee and elbow protectors designed for mountain bikers: CE Level 1 denotes basic protection. Protectors with protection level 2 absorb significantly more impact energy in the event of a fall – they are particularly suitable for more demanding disciplines such as enduro, freeride or downhill. According to the manufacturer, protection level 2 also applies to the slim-fit 6.0 Evo Lite model.

Soft shock-absorbing foam forms the basis of the new Leatt protectors. The ‘Evo’ and ‘Evo EXT’ models also feature external sliding plates. These plates allow for controlled sliding in the event of a fall. According to Leatt, particular emphasis was placed on comfort and breathability during the development of the new range, with a view to all-day use.

The knee protectors are priced between 119.00 euros (Lite) and 139.00 euros for the longer version with shin protection (EXT). The standard model costs 129.00 euros, whilst the elbow protectors cost 99.00 euros.
