The idea behind the Switch Rack by Restrap is simple: maximum stability for securing luggage, combined with extremely quick assembly and a high degree of versatility. Thanks to additional mounting points, the system can also be expanded with further accessories such as bags, cages or brackets. The focus is therefore clearly on off-road use and flexible loading.
Assembling the Restrap Switch Rack was one of the pleasantly straightforward parts of the test – albeit with a few minor caveats.
On the plus side: The basic structure is virtually self-explanatory. The transport platform (aluminium tray) simply needs to be secured with two screws – after that, the system is practically ready for use.
The rack is fitted to the bike using a special thru-axle. This is where a minor drawback becomes apparent: the instructions do not really explain clearly how to choose the right spacers for the specific rear triangle width. Consequently, it takes a bit of trial and error to get the rack sitting neatly centred over the rear wheel.
Once that’s done, it all happens quickly:
The front mount is rubberised, protecting the frame and offering surprisingly secure hold. A particularly clever feature is that the upper strut can be flipped over to accommodate different frame geometries and wheel sizes – simple, yet effective.
A major advantage is its suitability for everyday use:
Once the axle is in place, the rack can be fitted or removed in no time at all with just a few tools – all you need is a 4 mm Allen key.
Off-road, the Restrap Switch Rack demonstrates exactly what it was built for: maximum stability under heavy loads. The system sits extremely securely; nothing wobbles or sways – even on rough terrain, your luggage remains stable. Particularly impressive is the load capacity of up to 30 kilograms. Compared to many rival systems, this is a real standout feature and makes the rack ideal for long expeditions or heavy loads.
At the heart of the system is the aluminium loading plate:
This ensures that luggage can be secured safely and securely, and is a clear advantage over traditional tubular roof racks.
The side mounting points are also impressive: there are four mounting options on each side, spaced at the standard 64-millimetre interval, for use with additional bottle cages, bags or modular extensions, for example. This opens up a wealth of possibilities for customised set-ups.
Despite its simple design, the system as a whole looks very high-quality and well thought-out. The combination of a minimalist design and high load-bearing capacity is a success.

The Restrap Switch Rack is a real highlight for discerning bikepackers. It combines easy assembly, exceptional stability and a high load capacity in a well-designed system that really comes into its own, particularly when used off-road.
Minor shortcomings in the assembly instructions – such as guidance on choosing the right spacers – are easily overlooked given the otherwise very successful design. Overall, the Switch Rack is an extremely robust, modular luggage rack that is particularly well-suited to riders who want to carry a lot of luggage safely and securely – whilst also valuing ease of use.
In a direct comparison with the Ortlieb Quick-Rack L, Old Man Mountain Elkhorn, Topeak Zi:RAK Essential and Aeroe Spider Rack, the Restrap Switch Rack Clearly an off-road and heavy-duty specialist, with a focus on stability and payload.
