With TIDURA, Ortlieb is launching its own material system for bags, designed to combine durability, waterproofing and repairability.
Ortlieb is expanding its in-house production capabilities: the Franconian bag manufacturer is introducing TIDURA, a material system it has developed in-house. It is set to be used in selected pannier bags, rucksacks and travel bags in future. The focus is on two fabric variants, each designed for different purposes: TIDURA strong for heavy-duty use and TIDURA core for everyday use, offering a balanced combination of weight, robustness and ease of use.
The product will be launched in September 2026. What is new here is not so much Ortlieb’s fundamental focus on waterproof bags, but rather its commitment to tailoring the fabric used – including the coating – closely to its own design. According to the manufacturer, the base fabric is woven in the Benelux countries and then coated in Heilsbronn, Middle Franconia.
Material, coating and weld as a single unit
When it comes to cycle bags, it is not just the outer material that determines whether your belongings stay dry. The seams, fastenings and the way a bag is attached to the bike are at least as important. Ortlieb therefore regards TIDURA as a complete system: the fabric, TPU coating, high-frequency welding and fastenings are all designed to work in harmony.
The material is based on a technical polyester fabric with a TPU coating. TPU, or thermoplastic polyurethane, is used in bag manufacturing because it can provide a waterproof, flexible and hard-wearing surface. This is particularly important for cyclists: panniers are not only exposed to rain whilst on the move, but also to spray from the rear wheel, dirt, friction against the luggage rack and frequent loading and unloading.
High-frequency welding replaces traditional stitched seams. This process joins the edges of the material together without creating any puncture holes. It is precisely at the seams that many bags have potential weak points through which water can penetrate. That is why Ortlieb uses welded seams for the TIDURA range, which are designed to form part of the waterproof construction.
Conclusion
With TIDURA, Ortlieb is expanding its production to include a key component: its own bag fabric. For cyclists, the TPU coating – which is specially designed for welded seams – the high abrasion resistance and the fact that the fabric can be repaired are particularly appealing. The first models are designed for commuting, cycle tours and everyday use. However, it remains to be seen in independent practical tests whether the material’s advantages make a noticeable difference during tough, long-term use.
Two versions: one for everyday use and one for heavy-duty use
With TIDURA strong and TIDURA core, Ortlieb will in future distinguish between two material variants. TIDURA strong is designed for travel, heavy loads and regular use in demanding conditions. This includes, for example, daily commutes in all weathers, multi-day cycle tours or trips where bags frequently come into contact with the bike, kerbs or other objects.
TIDURA core, on the other hand, is aimed more at urban commuters and users looking for a rucksack that is robust yet as easy to use as possible. This version is designed to be lighter and better balanced, without compromising on basic weather protection.
According to the manufacturer, TIDURA core achieves a tensile strength of 1,500 newtons, whilst TIDURA strong achieves 2,400 newtons. Both variants are said to withstand more than 100,000 Martindale abrasion cycles. This figure describes a material’s resistance to abrasion under repeated friction. In practical terms for cycling, this means, first and foremost, that the fabric is designed for frequent contact and long-term use. However, independent field tests are still needed to show how the material, coating and fastenings perform in real-world, long-term use.
Waterproof right down to the fastening mechanism
Ortlieb states that TIDURA products have a water column rating of 100,000 millimetres, including the material and heat-sealed seams. According to the manufacturer, the specific protection class depends on the model in question. The protection classes listed are IP53, IP64 and IP67. Whilst IP53 describes protection against dust accumulation and water spray from an oblique angle, IP64 denotes protection against dust and powerful water jets. IP67 means that a product can be temporarily submerged.
This distinction makes sense for everyday cycling. A pannier must close securely in continuous rain and on wet roads, whilst a rucksack often needs additional protection when parked or on the way to work. The fastening remains the key factor here: roll-top fastenings work purely mechanically and can be sealed tightly when rolled up correctly. For the Duffle Zip, Ortlieb relies on a waterproof TIZIP zip.

First products featuring TIDURA
Initially, TIDURA strong will be used in three well-known product categories. The Back-Roller 20L Zip-Pocket is a rear pannier featuring the QL2.2 mounting system. It is therefore aimed at touring cyclists, commuters and e-bike riders who carry luggage on a rack. The Quick-Lock system is designed for tool-free adjustment to many conventional luggage racks.
Also featuring TIDURA strong is the Velocity 23L, a roll-top rucksack with a laptop compartment and a ventilated back panel. Also new is the Duffle Zip, available in 40 and 60-litre sizes. The new Daypack 23L is designed for the TIDURA core range; it is an urban day rucksack with a roll-top closure, a laptop compartment and a ventilated TPU back panel.
Ortlieb thus caters for a range of cycling scenarios: the classic pannier on the luggage rack, the rucksack for the commute to work, and travel bags for longer tours and outdoor adventures. For cycle tourists in particular, the combination of durable material, a watertight seal and the long-term availability of spare parts is crucial.
Repairs are to remain part of the plan
Ortlieb combines TIDURA with his well-known approach to repairs. The products come with a five-year guarantee, and spare parts are to remain available for at least ten years after the product is discontinued. This means that, ideally, wear-and-tear parts such as hooks, brackets or fastenings can be replaced rather than having to replace the entire bag.
This is particularly relevant for panniers: their fastenings are subjected to heavy strain in everyday use, for example when removing them at the station, when switching between different bikes, or on rough terrain. Ortlieb already stocks replacement parts for its Quick-Lock systems, which are available individually.
