With the Manzanita Cradle Mount, the bag and pannier rack specialist Old Man Mountain presents a particularly robust mount for handlebar bags and roll-top bags. Developed in collaboration with Salsa Cycles, the system utilises a double handlebar clamp for 31.8 and 35 mm handlebars. The Manzanita Cradle is available as a set with a waterproof bag with top-load or sideload roll-top closure. The cradle mount carries up to 3.6 kg and costs 209.90 euros as a set.

Topics in this article

Bikepacking is no longer a niche topic, but the hardware often lags behind. Straps that rub against the paintwork and bags that touch the tyres on hard descents are annoying. This is where the Manzanita system comes in: instead of flabby Velcro fasteners, a solid Double handlebar clamp for use.

The handlebar bag system from Old Man Mountain is designed to enable stable attachment without slipping and was developed together with Salsa Cycles. A toploader bag was specially designed for dropbar handlebars, which fits perfectly between the overhanging grips. Flatbar riders can also opt for the slightly larger Sideloader bag.

The key features at a glance:

  • Bombproof: Double clamping for 31.8 and 35 mm handlebars (no twisting!).
  • Organisation: 6 integrated M5 threads for accessories such as GPS or lighting.
  • Weatherproof: 9 or 11 litre volume, 100 % waterproof and welded.
  • Toploader principle: Optimised for drop bars (gravel), easy access from above.
  • Sideloader principle: Ideal for flat bar, flexible volume with side access
  • Additional storage space: Stretch mesh outer pocket for bar or windbreaker.
  • Weight & load: The set weighs a slim 412 g and can carry up to 3.6 kg.
  • Price: 209,90 Euro

Manzanita Cradle Mount with double clamping

The Manzanita Cradle Mount uses a double handlebar clamp that can be adapted to 31.8 mm and 35 mm handlebars. The design is intended to prevent the mount from twisting or slipping. The pre-moulded shell for luggage storage has integrated guides for fastening straps, which are included in the scope of delivery.

Six standard M5 attachment points on the mount enable the installation of smartphone holders, bike computers or lights. The maximum load capacity is 3.6 kg. The system can be attached to the handlebars in no time at all with just two screws and does not require any awkward spacers that prevent collisions with shift or brake cables in other designs.

Waterproof bags for drop bar or flat bar

The topload bag offers 9 litres of volume and uses a roll-top closure for access from above. This design is particularly suitable for dropbar handlebars as it makes it easier to access the bag while riding. An integrated air release valve allows the contents to be compressed after closing.

The construction is fully welded and waterproof. An attached mesh pocket with divider provides quick access to snacks or small items. The bag weighs 412 g and has integrated loops for the fastening straps.

Old Man Mountain also offers the system in a side-load version with a volume of 11 litres, which is suitable for flatbar handlebars. This version also costs 209.90 euros. The bags are also available individually without a mount and cost 94.90 euros each.

Alternative systems: What does the market offer?

Old Man Mountain delivers a very technical system here. Anyone looking for alternatives should take a look at these concepts:

  • Specialised/Fjällräven Handlebar Rack: A similar aluminium frame that stabilises bags but places less focus on integrated mounting points for GPS devices.
  • Restrap Bumper Bar: A minimalist solution that acts as a spacer to protect trains and prevent the bag from bouncing or can be used as a mounting point for lamps.
  • Aeroe Spider Handlebar Cradle: An extremely robust system that originally comes from the MTB sector and shows its strengths particularly on hard trails, but is visually very bulky.

What the editorial team says

With the Manzanita system, Old Man Mountain primarily appeals to cyclists who don't want to compromise when it comes to mounting. The integration of M5 mounts directly on the holder is a real highlight for long-distance riders.
