Panniers that are fitted correctly sit securely, do not rattle and, on long rides, protect the pannier, the luggage rack and the bike frame from unnecessary wear and tear.
Panniers are among the most practical transport solutions for touring bikes. They take the strain off your back, protect your luggage from splashes and ensure a balanced weight distribution on the bike. However, this requires a secure attachment between the bag and the luggage rack. If the hooks are too loose, the bag will start to wobble. If they are positioned incorrectly, the bag may rub against the spokes, slip when braking or even come loose on uneven terrain.
A pannier isn’t secure simply because it’s easy to attach at first. For a stable fit, three elements must work together: the upper mounting hooks, the lower anti-sway bracket and the luggage rack itself. On touring bikes, these details ensure a smooth ride, less wear and tear, and greater safety. By distributing additional weight low down and protecting contact points, you can prevent the most common problems before you’ve even covered your first kilometre. It quickly becomes apparent whether this system is properly adjusted, particularly on longer tours with a heavier load.

Before fitting, you should check the diameter of the luggage rack struts. Modern mounting systems usually feature various hooks, inserts or rubber pads that can be adjusted to fit different tube diameters. In current Ortlieb systems, for example, hooks for round struts up to 16 millimetres are standard. For certain QL2 and QL2.1 systems*, there are also versions available for 18 or 20 millimetres. Square or heavily profiled struts, on the other hand, can be problematic because the hooks do not fit snugly and securely.
That, too, VAUDE QMR 2.0 System can be adjusted to fit various struts. The matching hooks are designed for tube diameters of 8 to 16 millimetres. It is crucial that the hook does not simply rest on the tube, but encloses it as snugly as possible. Only then will the bag remain secure, even over potholes and during rapid changes of direction.
Many panniers come with spacers or rubber pads. These small inserts may seem unremarkable, but they fulfil an important function. They compensate for the gap between the hook and the pannier rack strut, preventing the bag from sliding back and forth along the tube.
When fitting, there must be no gap between the hook, the adapter and the strut. At the same time, the hook should not be so tight that the bag can only be attached or detached with considerable force. The correct adjustment is achieved when the bag can be fitted easily but, once locked into place, can barely move from side to side.
The upper hooks bear the weight, but the lower anti-swing device prevents the bag from swinging whilst the bike is in motion. It engages with an additional strut on the luggage rack and stabilises the connection against sideways movement.
This lower hook should be adjusted so that it locks securely in the direction of travel. This reduces the risk of the bag coming loose unintentionally during heavy braking or on rough terrain. On many systems, the hook can be moved or rotated without the need for tools. On current Ortlieb bags, a plastic spacer can also be rotated by 90 degrees if more space is required between the bag and the luggage rack.
In addition to traditional hook fastenings, modern touring bikes are increasingly featuring integrated click systems. These include, for example, Ortlieb Quick-Lock 3.1, VAUDE UniKlip, MIK and Racktime Snapit 2.0. These systems are quick to fit and make it easier to remove the bags on a daily basis.
However, they are not automatically compatible with one another. In the Racktime system, Snapit and Snapit 2.0 are explicitly separate. Bags and adapters from the new generation are only compatible with the corresponding 2.0 luggage racks. Snapit 2.0 allows for flexible adjustment to both narrow and wide rack platforms and is designed to carry loads of up to 12 kilograms.
Ortlieb Quick-Lock 3.1 Operates without permanently fitted bag hooks. The bag clicks into specially shaped mounting elements and locks into place. This creates a particularly neat connection, but requires a compatible luggage rack or suitable mount. The maximum load capacity is up to 9 kilograms per bag for Quick-Lock 2.1 and 3.1, and up to 12.5 kilograms for Quick-Lock 2.2. However, the lower load limit of the bag, rack or bicycle always applies.
Even a perfectly adjusted pannier can impair handling if it is packed incorrectly. Heavy items such as tools, spare parts or a camping stove should be placed at the bottom and as close as possible to the wheel axle. Both rear panniers should be roughly the same weight.
For loaded touring bikes, the ADFC recommends a weight distribution of roughly one-third at the front and two-thirds at the rear. This keeps the centre of gravity low and improves control when cornering and braking. Lightweight equipment that is rarely needed can be stowed in lowrider panniers, whilst rainwear, snacks and maps should remain within easy reach.
Before any long ride, it’s worth taking a quick look to check the hooks, adaptors and contact surfaces. Sand and dust act like abrasives in these areas. That’s why the luggage rack struts and the backs of your panniers should be cleaned regularly. Protective films or special abrasion-resistant elements prevent the paintwork from being damaged.
It is particularly important to ensure that the bag does not swing against the frame continuously. Even slight movements can leave noticeable scuff marks on a trip lasting several days. With delicate aluminium frames, the contact area should therefore be checked particularly carefully.
