Potent and fun downhill, enduring on tour, strong uphill: characteristics that can hardly be combined on classic bikes. There are these perfect all-rounders among e-MTBs. Who will make the best all-rounder in 2021?

What do you get when you try to combine as many skills as possible in one product? Something characterless, undefined? Or a brilliant all-rounder? As far as e-mountainbikes are concerned, we are confident that it is the brilliant all-rounder. Because what the bike industry has been trying to do for decades seems to have been achieved for the first time with the E-MTB: to build a bike that can do everything and is exactly the right companion for the majority of bikers - as a comfortable and safe touring bike, as a lively and fun trail bike and - if necessary - as an enduro bruiser.

Eight high-end eMTBs for 2021 on test - our video gives an insight into the test field and our test track. Riding fun included!

Why are the chances of finding this super all-rounder among e-bikes so good? Because many of the contradictions that make classic bikes a lazy compromise are smoothed out by the motor. We see the best chances of finding this super all-rounder in the 150-millimetre league. In other words, where the majority of current E-MTB models can be found anyway. 150 to 160 millimetres of suspension travel promise comfort and riding safety, the bikes are suitable for touring and are easy to handle. What puts off some touring riders on non-motorised bikes due to their weight alone, is therefore gladly accepted on e-bikes. The situation is similar with tyres, brakes and suspension forks - thanks to the e-assistance, you don't have to be stingy, you can also go big.

All results of the comparative test

Which bike offers the best compromise for all areas of use? And which one stands out as a comfortable tourer or a fun trail rocket? We tested the bikes in direct comparison on a variety of trails and tours. In addition, each candidate underwent an extensive laboratory procedure. Who excels in terms of range? And who has the centre of gravity and weight best under control? The entire test with all results, data and details can be found in EMTB 6/2020. You can also download the complete comparison test of the 2021 super all-rounders as a PDF below the article. The test costs 2.99 euros. You can obtain the EMTB conveniently in the Subscription, in our Online shop and as an app edition for Apple and Android.

Florentin Vesenbeckh has been on a mountain bike since he was ten years old. Even on his very first tour, he focussed on single trails - and even after more than 30 years in the saddle of an MTB, these are still the quintessence of biking for him. He spent his youth competing in various bike disciplines and later his cycling career was characterised by years as a riding technique coach. Professionally, the experienced test editor now focusses on e-mountainbikes. In recent years, the qualified sports scientist and trained journalist has tested over 300 bikes and more than 40 different motor systems in the laboratory and in practice.
