New all-rounders from Bulls!
750 watt hours, under 21 kilos! With the new Sonic models with Shimano EP8, Bulls wants to cause a stir on the e-MTB market in 2021. Enduro or all-mountain? Bulls has both variants on offer.

It was only a year ago that Bulls presented its new, extensive Sonic family to us. Even then, the four models covered a huge range of applications. A hardtail (29-inch or 27.5-inch - 120 millimetres), trail full (29-inch - 120 millimetres), all-mountain (wheel mix 29-inch front, 27.5 rear - 150 millimetres) and an enduro (wheel mix 29-inch front, 27.5 rear - 180 millimetres). The models for the 2021 model year perfectly complement the existing fleet. With 140 millimetres of suspension travel, a full carbon frame and 29-inch wheels, the Sonic EVO AMS bridges the gap between trail-fully and all-mountain - the all-rounder among Bulls' E-MTBs, so to speak. But that's not all! The product managers have also added a minimalist enduro bike with 160 millimetres of travel and 29-inch wheels - the Sonic EVO ENS. And the price? Extremely attractive! The entry-level Sonic EVO AMS 1 Carbon model is available for 4999 euros. The enduro version starts at 5799 euros.

The drivetrain on the new Bulls Sonic AMS / ENS

Despite different equipment variants and suspension travel, the Sonic clique for 2021 has one thing in common. The motor. The completely newly developed carbon E-Power chassis houses the new Shimano EP8. The newcomer feeds the energy required to deliver 85 Newton metres of maximum torque to the trail from an Intube battery with a capacity of 750 watt hours.

The Bulls Sonic S models in detail

We already know the thicker steerer tube from 1.8 to 1 1/8 inches (standard is 1.5 to 1 1/8 inches) from last year. The latest addition from Bulls should also benefit from the increased stiffness in the head tube and better steering precision. Of course, integration is not neglected either: all cables run neatly inside the carbon frame. Some of the electric cables even run through the stem. On top of this, a dropper post from Eightpins on both AMS top models provides plenty of legroom downhill.

The geometry of the new Bulls Sonic S models

In terms of geometry, Bulls has focussed on a modern design. The steering angle is slack at 66 degrees for the AMS version. In contrast, the 66 degrees on the ENS seems rather restrained. A value that would otherwise also look good on a racy trail bike. At 470 millimetres (AMS) and 460 millimetres (ENS) for size L, the reach is in the modern average range. The relatively long chainstays (450 / 451 mm) should give the bike good climbing ability.
