With the Flame AL, Megamo wants to make a statement in the price-performance segment. The Spanish power eMTB comes in 160 and 150 millimetre versions. The price range extends from the €4599 entry-level model to the top-of-the-range Flame AL 03 for €6999.

Megamo is not a big name in this country. Hardly anyone knows that the Spanish company's cycling tradition goes back to the 1980s and that the Megamo Liberty Team once dominated MTB racing in Spain. Although the roots of the bike brand from Catalonia lie in the mountain bike sector, the company now covers almost all areas of cycling - with or without a motor. All products are developed at the company headquarters in Girona and are also manufactured in the region.

Nowadays, the northern Spanish company makes a name for itself above all with its favourable prices. In 2023, Megamo launched two exciting e-MTB models: the full-power Crave bike with a Shimano motor and the lightweight Native, a trail bike with a TQ drive. Now the Spaniards are following up with the Flame. The top version comes as an enduro bike with 160 millimetres of front and rear travel, while the other four models are aimed at the all-mountain segment with 150 millimetres of travel. With 29er wheels, mullet compatibility and moderately sporty geometry, the Flame AL is likely to be more of an all-rounder than a specialist in both segments. There will be five aluminium models between 4599 and 6999 euros, each with the new Bosch CX. Only the cheapest entry-level model comes with a 600 battery, all other models with the 800 Bosch PowerTube.

The facts about the Megamo Flame AL

  • Frame: Aluminium, sizes S, M, L
  • Motor: Bosch Performance Line CX
  • Battery: Bosch PowerTube 800 Wh (600 Wh in the Flame AL 20)
  • Suspension travel: 160/160 mm, 150/160 mm
  • Wheel size: 29 inch, Mullet compatible

Robust frame

When designing the aluminium frame, particular emphasis was placed on robustness. With an ASTM category 5 rating, the Flame is ready for jumps and high-speed descents in extreme terrain. The permissible total weight is a generous 150 kilos. The mullet compatibility allows individual configurations for preferences and areas of use.

Special attention was also paid to the design of the motor mount and down tube. The aim was to minimise weight while maximising stability. Squeeze casting is what the manufacturer calls the process used to produce the lightweight motor mount. The down tube is manufactured using an extrusion process which, according to the manufacturer, makes it possible to reduce the wall thickness and therefore the weight in key areas and achieve an optimum balance between strength and lightness. This design is also intended to optimise weight distribution over the entire bike and thus ensure better handling.

The Bosch CX drive in the Megamo Flame AL

We have reported sufficiently on the latest generation Bosch CX. The power unit from the Swabians also stands for performance, efficiency and modulation in the Megamo. With a maximum torque of 85 Nm and up to 600 watts of peak power, the power pack delivers dynamic and extremely potent support on demanding tours. The Gen5 is also pleasantly quiet.

Four out of five models come with Bosch's 800 Wh PowerTube battery. Experience has shown that the Bosch bikes can manage around 2000 metres of altitude in the standardised BIKE high-altitude test. The new PowerTube battery not only offers 50 watt hours more capacity, it is also more compact and lighter than its predecessor. The Megamo's energy reservoir can be topped up with the 250 Wh PowerMore range extender. The Flame Pilot then has a total of 1,050 watt hours.

The Bosch Purion 200 is mounted on the handlebars as the command centre. The Bosch display is connected to the Bosch eBike Flow app and is therefore embedded in the Bosch smart system. This means that it is always up to date thanks to regular over-the-air updates. Navigation, pedalling assistance, activity tracking - the Purion 200 is the joystick on the Megamo cockpit. In addition, the motor configuration can be customised using the eBike Flow app, allowing you to adapt every ride to your personal riding style: full power for the most challenging climbs or gentle support for relaxed rides - whatever you prefer.

Megamo: Four-bar linkage for optimum downhill control

As with the Native light e-bike, Megamo also sticks to the horizontal damper design on the Flame. The manufacturer's reasoning: the forces are transmitted more directly and in a single direction, resulting in a more responsive and agile riding experience while reducing the weight of the bike compared to the vertical shock position. However, unlike the Native, the Flame uses a four-bar rear triangle - this should ensure maximum control, especially on descents.

The geometry of the Megamo Flame AL

Generous dimensions: With a 484 mm reach (size L), 1280 mm wheelbase and 460 mm chainstays, the Megamo Flame AL is clearly on the smooth side. The head and seat angles are not extreme. This positions the Spaniard more as a balanced all-rounder than an extreme specialist.
