Minimally shorter chainstays, a 0.9 degree slacker head angle and a bottom bracket drop of ten millimetres characterise the new full carbon machine. A positive side effect of the switch to carbon fibre is, according to Focus, the increased rear triangle stiffness, which now also satisfies heavy and aggressive riders. The update makes the new, lighter SAM a touch more agile. In addition, you are even lower on the bike, which has a positive effect on cornering. The Enduro hangs well on the throttle and is very easy to pedal and pull onto the rear wheel with little physical effort. Short intermediate sprints are no problem, even with an open platform on the Monarch Plus shock. The extremely steep seat angle of 75.5 degrees positions the rider far forwards. This brings advantages when climbing steep climbs, but shortens the seat length, resulting in a rather compact riding position despite the long reach. Downhill, the smoothness gained from the slacker steering angle is impressive. The SAM's balanced geometry leaves nothing to be desired here. The fork and rear suspension work harmoniously, but do not filter out all the subtleties of the terrain. Even on fast hits, the rider gets sufficient feedback from the ground.
Conclusion The SAM C Team is a true enduro race bike with a firm rather than comfortable set-up. With different tyres, it would weigh well under 13 kilos.
PLUS Stiff, lightweight carbon frame, balanced handling
MINUS Short seating position due to very steep seat angle
