The riding tips for downhillers are simple: leave the throttle on, brakes on and chain on the right. We stuck to it on the big bike test until our eyes watered. Celebrity tester Marcus Klausmann was still faster.

This guy is a machine! After exactly 50 seconds, you can hear the clatter of the chain. Then Marcus flies over the big gap, sweeps through the berm, pedals hard twice and crosses the finish line. Whoosh! For the seventh time today. And for the seventh time, the stopwatch stops at under a minute. "Time?" he asks, pulling his glasses off his helmet. "The third fastest, six hundredths behind Giant and GT." Klausmann nods, climbs off the Specialized "Demo 8" and begins to dictate his impressions of the ride. Things always have to move quickly for the twelve-time German DH champion. You can hardly keep up with the writing: "The geometry is great, nice low centre of gravity. Also the first fork in the test that wasn't much too soft, but the rear suspension kicks at full throttle, which slows you down. A different concept to the GT, less racy, but super easy to control!" He says and climbs into the waiting car that takes him to the start of test run 8.
