A new frame platform, two suspension travel options, two wheel variants and five frame sizes: Last presents a few weeks after the super-light carbon enduro Tarvo two new aluminium mountain bikes in one fell swoop. Both the enduro bike Coal with 160 millimetres and the All Mountain Glen with 145 millimetre travel will roll on 29-inch wheels in future. In addition, the two full-suspension bikes are available with MX wheel combinations (29" front/27.5" rear).
On paper, the Glen and Coal differ by just 15 millimetres of travel at the rear and 20 millimetres at the front. On the trail, however, the Coal is likely to be a potent enduro bike, while the Glen is a downhill-orientated all-mountain bike. Our Test of the Last Glen MX in BIKE 5/20 in which the All Mountain with 150/134 mm travel was one of the best bikes in the downhill segment. But now the Glen has even more travel. And how does Last get two models out of one frame? Depending on the model and wheel size, the shock installation length and the rocker arm vary. The MX option is realised with a longer link, so the original geometry is retained despite the significantly smaller rear wheel. The MX option offers small riders in particular more freedom of movement.
On the Coal and Glen, Last adjusts the chainstay length, seat angle, bottom bracket height and head tube length to suit the size. The chainstay length for size 155 is a short 427 mm and increases continuously up to 444 mm for size 195. The seat tube is slightly steeper on the larger frame sizes in order to get more pressure on the front wheel. The short seat tubes and the fully retractable seat post allow bikers to choose between several sizes - depending on their preference for a longer or shorter bike. Sizes 155 and 165 offer a bottom bracket that is five millimetres lower, as shorter 170 mm cranks are provided. Together with the short seat tube and the very compact chainstays, these points should generate an exceptionally agile 29er or MX bike for smaller riders.
The new Coal and Glen are available in untreated aluminium. The "raw" version is neither colourless anodised nor clear lacquered. The frame can therefore be given a fresh polish at any time. Also available: a robust black anodised version and a transparent blue powder coating. Last can also realise individual colour requests on request for a surcharge of 799 euros.
In addition to framesets from Coal and Glen, Last also offers complete bikes. Using the configurator, you can not only choose the components yourself, but also the colour of the decals. Glen complete bikes are available from 12.5 kg and prices start at 3299 euros. The Coal enduro bike starts at 3459 euros and can have a total weight
weight of 12.6 kilos without pedals.
In addition to shipping, customers also have the option of picking up their bike at the company headquarters in Dortmund and having it set up for them as part of a guided test ride. All information can be found at www.last-bikes.com.
The two new Last mountain bikes are now available to order as customised builds and framesets and should be available from July 2020.
