Weight tolerance for new bikes
What weight differences are still acceptable between manufacturers' specifications and the real weight? A BIKE reader wanted to know and bicycle expert Dirk Zedler answers this question.

Question from H. Schmid: As the price and the weight of a new bike are very much related and often a higher weight is on the scales on delivery, I would like to know what weight deviation is still acceptable?

Answer from Dirk Zedler, bicycle expert: Unfortunately, I am not aware of any judgement from the bicycle world that provides clarity here. From my point of view as an expert, not all mountain bikes can be lumped together. I don't consider a deviation of one kilo in an ultra-light carbon cross-country racer to be acceptable. A freerider weighing 18 kilograms, on the other hand, is. However, even here it shouldn't be two kilos.

It is important to note that manufacturers usually weigh their bikes in the smallest size and not ready to ride and therefore state this in the catalogue. This means that the bike is weighed without pedals and bottle cage. Other accessories that many bikers fit, e.g. bike computer, pump and inner tube bag, are also not included. My tip: Take the real weights from the BIKE tests or take a scale with you to the bike shop.
