Riding technique special: Wheelie
The wheelie is the show manoeuvre par excellence, but also a good balance exercise. Stefan Herrmann shows how the wheelie on a mountain bike in front of the ice cream parlour doesn't end up being a laughing stock.

Stretch your arms: Extend your arms and lower your hips backwards to bring your centre of gravity over the rear wheel.

Knee insert: If you are in danger of tipping to the left, extend your right knee to compensate.

Flat pedals: Stefan rides with clipless pedals. It is better to practise the wheelie with flat pedals.

Sweet spot: If your centre of gravity is above the rear wheel axle, the bike feels very light.

Select middle gear: One finger on the rear brake. Engage middle gear (middle blade, middle sprocket). Go low over the handlebars.

Routes: At the same time, stretch your arms quickly and apply pressure to the pedals (strong front leg). This takes the pressure off the front wheel.

Sweet spot: The centre of gravity must now be exactly above the rear axle. The bike will then appear to be very light. Important: Always keep your arms straight.

Balancing: Balance is achieved through even pedalling and sensitive use of the rear brake.

Knee insert: By extending your knees, you can equalise your lateral balance. Always keep your arms straight!

The most common mistake when doing a wheelie: bent arms.Photo: BIKE Magazin The most common mistake when doing a wheelie: bent arms.

Arms bent: Never bend your arms in order to equalise your balance forwards or backwards. This causes the body's centre of gravity to move too far forwards.
