The spring district in Upper Austria takes you along rivers, lakes and rolling hills into an eventful natural world - enjoyment with a view
There are good reasons why three of the major European cycle routes and many leisure cycle routes converge in the Quellenviertel in Upper Austria. After all, the region between the Inn and Salzach rivers, between thermal spa towns and the Hausruckwald forest is virtually predestined for cycling tourists with taste. For those with e-bikes as well as those without a motor. Over 1500 kilometres in the border triangle of Upper Austria, Salzburger Land and Bavaria offer relaxed and well-guided pedalling. For the most part, enjoyment and the scenic experience take precedence over top sporting performance. Cyclists should not miss out on the proverbial hospitality and varied cuisine, as well as relaxation in one of the region's thermal spas. "Slow biking" with a wellness feeling, so to speak. The choice is as large and relaxing there as it is there. And you can also cross the borders into Bavaria and Salzburger Land, where there is plenty to discover.
Thermal baths, spas and the power of nature give you new energy. The warm water from the depths brings well-being and balance - while bathing, taking a sauna or enjoying soothing treatments. With the Eurothermen Resort Bad Schallerbach and the Spa Resort Geinberg, two of Upper Austria's most important thermal and health resorts are located in the spring district. They combine the power of thermal water with modern wellness and health offers and make the region a place of relaxation.
The Quellenviertel is characterised by impressive natural areas that could hardly be more diverse and varied. The rolling hills are equally inviting for hiking, strolling and leisurely cycling. The region's river landscapes are particularly attractive and offer ideal conditions for relaxed tours.
A particular highlight is Austria's largest contiguous moorland landscape around the Ibmer Moor. This unique area is home to numerous bird species, some of which are endangered, and offers fascinating insights into sensitive ecosystems.
Guided tours for adults and specially designed children's tours convey the natural areas of the Ibmer Moor and the Lower Inn European Nature Reserve with a great deal of empathy and educational expertise.
It's not just the thermal spas in the Quellenviertel that invite you to swim and splash around, numerous outdoor and adventure pools in the region and especially the lakes are popular destinations for water lovers of all ages. Some moorland lakes, such as Holzöster See, Höllerer See or Ibmer See, reach bathing temperatures as early as May. There are also excellent bathing facilities in Pramet at the bathing lake of the same name, Lochen at Mattsee, Badesee Leithen and Perwang at Grabensee.
Incidentally, there is a wide range of high-quality camping facilities around the lakes.
The Quellenviertel comprises eight Upper Austrian and three Bavarian towns. And all of these towns have one thing in common. A historic town centre awaits you in the centre. Whether district towns such as Braunau, Grieskirchen, Ried and Vöcklabruck, or small towns such as Altheim, Attnang-Puchheim, Mattighofen or Schwanenstadt - interesting architecture and great shopping opportunities await you everywhere. A special architectural style characterises the towns along the Inn. The Bavarian towns of Burghausen, Simbach and Tittmoning, as well as Braunau, are built in the Inn-Salzach style. Guided tours and walking tours are offered in almost all towns. These range from beer strolls and night watchman tours to culinary adventure tours.
Regional cuisine, pub culture, a long tradition of beer brewing and a lively bread baking culture characterise the flavours of the Quellenviertel. This also includes savoury dumplings in many variations and fresh cider from the orchards. Breweries, bakeries, markets and festivals demonstrate this: Flavour comes from craftsmanship and passion.
Travelling by car from Germany is easy. Via the A94 motorway from Munich to Braunau-Simbach or via Passau and the A8 in Austria, as well as via Salzburg and the A1 towards Vienna.
ÖBB offers direct connections to Braunau, Ried i.I., Attnang-Puchheim, Vöcklabruck, Bad Schallerbach and Grieskirchen. Regional trains also run to the smaller railway stations in the region. DB provides a connection between the border towns of Simbach am Inn, Burghausen and Tittmoning with the cities of Munich and Salzburg.
This loop, which was only opened a year ago, is 180 kilometres long and can be comfortably cycled in four days. On the one hand, you can pedal along the Inn and Salzach rivers "drent", i.e. over in Bavaria, or "herent" on the Upper Austrian side. On the other hand, a scenic section also runs along the Salzburger Seeplatte with views of the Alps. The cycle tour can also be booked as a package with luggage transfer from 555 euros at

... the Roman Cycle Trail named after it runs for a total of 226 kilometres from Passau through the Quellenviertel region to Lake Attersee and from there on to Enns on the Danube. Large and clearly laid out information boards clearly convey everything worth knowing about the region and, of course, the historical Roman references. The Roman Museum in Altheim is a particularly exciting place to learn about history.

"Make 1 out of 4" was the motto of a merger of four tourism regions to form the new Quellenviertel. And they fit together well: the cross-border discovery district along the Inn and Salzach rivers, the cosy Innviertel with its hearty cuisine, the Vitalwelt thermal spa and health region and the Hausruckwald with its combination of small towns and relaxing natural areas. They all have one thing in common: the landscape is made for cyclists who like to take it easy and for whom enjoyment is paramount. The cycle path networks are predestined for this target group, prepared in four different cycle maps and available free of charge from the tourist office.
