Whether made of natural fibres or synthetics - functional vests have a major influence on the feel-good climate when cycling. 19 models in the big MYBIKE test

The first layer on the skin is the most important. Not only do sports physicians repeat this like a mantra, but it is also often confirmed by frequent cyclists. Functional vests should not chafe or scratch, but should be able to follow your every move. Depending on the activity and season, they should warm or cool and dry as quickly as possible after sweating or transfer the sweat to the overlying layer without stinking afterwards. These are pretty high demands for a small item of clothing. Added to this are the very different subjective feelings of each individual athlete. And we mustn't forget the issue of sustainability. Nevertheless, the search for the right textile is not a closed book, even if the range of different models and brands is extensive.

The MYBIKE team spent three months intensively testing the function, fit, durability after several washes and wearing comfort - not only when cycling, but also when cross-country skiing, jogging and Nordic walking as well as in everyday life. One realisation up front: there is no such thing as the super model that will delight all testers. The individual requirements and properties of the materials are too different. For example, people who sweat a lot during sport rarely like shirts made of pure merino wool, as they absorb a lot of moisture and dry slowly. But even in this case, there are promising further developments by combining wool with synthetic fibres. Speaking of synthetic fibres, more and more recycled polyester and polyamide are being knitted in order to conserve resources and protect the environment. However, attempts are also being made to move away from this, e.g. by using "new natural fibres" based on castor beans or - as has been known for some time - cellulose.
