Warm on the outside and grippy on the inside. That's how you could describe the perfect winter gloves for mountain bikers in a nutshell. However, good protection against the cold cannot always be reconciled with a pleasant grip or high wearing comfort. Our comparison of ten current models clarifies which glove performs best on the trail. Today: the Roeckl Rapallo in the test.

Equipment

The glove specialists from Munich are sending out the new Rapallo a fully equipped model in the test. Thanks to the in-house Roeck-Tex membrane, the Rapallo is not only waterproof but also windproof. Roeckl also uses padding all the way round the glove to ensure that it works on cold days too. The palms of the winter gloves are extensively covered with silicone prints. For visibility in traffic, Roeckl sews large reflective zones and material in bright neon yellow on the backhand - although the glove is also available in plain black.

Touchscreen-compatible zones on the thumb and index finger are just as much a part of the equipment as a long cuff with Velcro fastener for easier entry. Only the gel padding on the palm and a wipe zone on the thumb have to be omitted here - but the former is a matter of taste anyway.

Weather protection

H2O-Protection - what the Roeckl is supposed to do on the trail is also written large on the backhand. The Rapallo actually protects very well against water. The material on the backhand allows moisture to bead up over a large area and the Roeckl is quite resistant even in heavy rain. The material absorbs very little moisture - good for the insulating effect. The Rapallo also reliably blocks wind, making it one of the best winter gloves in the test in terms of weather protection. In terms of protection against the cold, it can't quite keep up with Chiba and GripGrab. Nevertheless, the comfortable padding is sufficient for days when the thermometer does not climb above freezing.

Fit

Thanks to the Velcro fastening and sufficiently wide fingers, the Rapallo is easy to slip into. The glove fits perfectly, is excellently made and has a soft lining on the inside. The seams are not noticeable at any point. However, the cuff is a little short, so that under certain circumstances or in a very stretched position, there may be a gap to the jacket. There is no towelling trim on the thumb. The silicone-covered Rapallo gives you a secure grip on the handlebars. However, the different layers on the palm slide against each other a little too much. The thumb and index finger lack the grippy trim and therefore the grip and feel when braking and shifting. Nevertheless, the Rapallo winter gloves cut a good figure on the trail overall.

Conclusion: Roeckl Rapallo winter gloves

Roeckl tailors an excellently crafted and clean-cut glove for cold and rainy days. The feel is very good, but the grip on the handlebars and controls could be better. The lining creates a lot of movement in the glove on technical terrain. A slightly longer cuff would be better towards the jacket. Overall, a top model for easy trail rides in bad weather. It lacks a proper wiping thumb.
