Warm on the outside and grippy on the inside. This is how you could describe the perfect cycling gloves for mountain bikers in winter. However, good protection against the cold cannot always be reconciled with a pleasant grip or high wearing comfort. Our comparison of ten current models clarifies which glove performs best on the trail. Today: the Craft ADV All Weather Glove in the test.

Equipment

Craft has developed the ADV All Weather range includes particularly light and thin winter gloves that are designed to score points on mild, bad weather days thanks to their windproof and waterproof outer surface. The inside is lined with a thin fleece to provide some insulation. The long cuff of the Craft also reaches well over the wrist. However, the material here is not very stretchy, so a Velcro fastener would be an advantage.

There is plenty of surface area on the thumb for wiping the nose or cleaning glasses, but the material could definitely be softer and more absorbent, as it scratches the nose a little. The smartphone screen can be operated with the thumb and index finger, but the two fingertips are covered with silicone, which should also provide grip on the brake and gear levers. The palms are lightly padded and small reflective logos ensure visibility in traffic.

Weather protection

Craft advertises its winter gloves as waterproof on its website. We cannot confirm this in the test. The fabric is largely windproof and keeps the wind well away from the fingers. However, even a small shower allows moisture to penetrate the glove. The area around the thumb is particularly sensitive to moisture. While the material on the palm is at least slightly water-repellent, the first raindrops penetrate through to the inside of the glove on the thumb. Riding in the rain with the Craft? Better not. The ADV is more of a fair-weather rider. The extremely sparse inner lining also fits in with this. In our cold check, the Craft is one of the weakest candidates. Fingers get cold very quickly below five degrees Celsius.

Fit

Once you have threaded your hands through the tight-fitting cuff, the ADV gloves fit like a second skin. However, a Velcro strap to adjust the width would not be amiss. The slim fingers without much padding are hardly noticeable, and the seams are hardly noticeable when gripping the handlebars. This ensures a good grip on the shift and brake levers. Despite the touchscreen function, the fingertips have sufficient grip on the controls - pleasant when you already have to concentrate on the demanding, slippery and damp trails.

The palm of the hand also grips the handles securely without slipping. The thin padding on the heel of the hand is hardly noticeable, but does not have a great cushioning effect. A slightly more stretchy material and a slightly pre-shaped cut would make the grip on the handlebars even more comfortable. In the long run, there is a bit of tension on the back of the hand.

Conclusion: Craft ADV SubZ winter gloves

A very direct grip and good fit are the strengths of the ADV. It hardly differs in feel from a light summer glove. However, because Craft also skimps on insulation, the maximum range of use is 5 degrees above zero. The fingers are well protected from the wind and reasonably well protected from splashing water. However, the ADV cannot withstand really cold weather or even rain showers. Recommended lightweight glove for autumn and spring.
