Warm on the outside and grippy on the inside. This is how you could describe the perfect cycling gloves for mountain bikers in winter. However, good protection against the cold cannot always be reconciled with a pleasant grip or high wearing comfort. Our comparison of ten current models clarifies which glove performs best on the trail. Today: the Chiba City Liner in the test.

Equipment

Chiba is launching a model that is not specifically designed for use on mountain bikes. The City Liner winter gloves should not only score points on the trail but also when commuting in the city. This is demonstrated by the bright neon yellow top, with additional reflective elements for even greater visibility. The German manufacturer goes all out when it comes to features. The City Liner is not only waterproof, but also insulated all around with Primaloft fibres. Its long cuffs extend to the forearm and are quite stretchy, so there is no Velcro fastener for adjustment.

On the palm, Chiba uses its own Digital Carbon Fibre, which is designed to provide grip in adverse conditions. In addition to a towelling trim on the thumb, there is also a touch function on the index finger. However, the City Liner does not have silicone prints for more grip on the fittings. Top: The fingers are quite strongly pre-shaped, so the upper material should tighten less when gripping the handlebars.

Weather protection

The City Liner scores highly in terms of weather protection. Its outer fabric not only allows water to run off cleanly, the glove is even completely waterproof. Riding in the rain is therefore no problem with the Chiba. This also means that the fabric is completely windproof and prevents wind from penetrating the fingers. This means that the Primaloft lining can fully unfold its effect and provide warmth for a long time. Thanks to their thick insulation, the Chiba winter gloves are among the warmest in comparison. A great choice for cold and rainy days. Also ideal for commuting.

Fit/handling

In typical Chiba fashion, the City Liner fits the hand like a glove. The glove is heavily pre-shaped, which means that nothing pinches or stretches when gripping the handlebars. The stretch cuff extends as far as the forearm and works perfectly without a Velcro fastener. The material of the palm provides the best grip on the handlebars and there is also sufficient sensitivity when braking and shifting. Unfortunately, the lining is not optimally fixed, so that the hand jerks a little more on the grip off-road - unpleasant when it gets technical. At least the lining doesn't automatically slip out when the glove is removed, as was often the case with older models.

Conclusion: Chiba City Liner winter gloves

Even though the Chiba is labelled City, it still has a good deal of off-road in it. The winter gloves are absolutely weatherproof and keep your hands warm in the long term. Rain can't harm the City Liner either - thanks to the integrated membrane. The fit is typical Chiba and extremely successful, the glove is strongly pre-shaped and feels very comfortable to wear. The synthetic leather provides a lot of grip and a good feel when braking and shifting gears. Only the inner lining slips a little on the grip in technical terrain, but it stays in place when slipping out.
