Is this perhaps the clearest difference between enduro riders and touring riders? The former ride with protectors, the latter without. For all convinced protector wearers and those who want to become one, we have the new ION K_Lite_Zip-knee pads tested. They differ from the K_Lite model in that they have a zip on the side. But they make it possible to put on the protectors without taking off your shoes. This is not only more comfortable, but also usually quicker. How the model K-Pact, which we tested in BIKE 4/2015The K_Lite_Zip protectors offer very good protection thanks to the SAS-Tec foam with an overlying hard shell. Comfort is not neglected either: to improve the fit of the K_Lite_Zip, its components are cut to a 3D pattern. However, the Munich-based company pays for all these details: The pair costs just under 100 euros, in a choice of grey or olive green and in sizes S to XL.
And indeed: nothing pinches or rubs on the trail. The K_Lite_Zip can be put on quickly and easily using the zip. In addition to the zip, two Velcro straps are attached to each protector. ION has also integrated several neoprene straps for a tighter fit and better adhesion to the skin. This means that the knee protector sits securely even on bumpy slopes and does not slip in the event of a fall. On contact with the ground, however, the K_Lite_Zip does not offer the same all-round protection as its big brother, the K_Pact. On the other hand, the tested pair weighs just 375 grams in size L. Thanks to the opening at the back, the lightweight ION protector is comfortable to wear even on hot days and doesn't have to be removed on every counter-climb.
The new ION K_Lite_Zip is particularly worth a look for those who don't like protectors, as it not only protects against flesh wounds (which are known to heal), but also against annoying and painful bone and joint injuries. The ION protector is lightweight, comfortable to wear and can be put on and taken off in a flash.
