With the Gobik Lancer, the Spaniards have a competition-orientated bib shorts in their range that aims to score points with its minimalist cut and compressive material. We find out how the understated, elegant cycling shorts fared in the test.

Topics in this article

The Spanish brand Gobik is still little known in this country, but was founded in 2010 as a manufacturer of customised team clothing. A few years later, the brand created its first complete collection of cycling clothing. High-quality fabrics and minimalist design have been the Spaniards' guiding principle ever since. The Long-Distance Bib Short Gobik Lancer to be met.

The competition shorts are made from a 4-way stretch material that offers a certain amount of compression and is designed to minimise seams. Adhesive seams are used in places to minimise friction over long distances and improve comfort. The leg hems are seamless and two centimetres longer.

Small reflective logos on the back of the thighs ensure visibility. Gobik has also dispensed with seams on the straps. Instead, they are woven from slightly tighter graphene threads to ensure a stable fit of the trousers. The full-length back has a mesh window for better ventilation. Gobik has also included a small pocket for a radio transmitter, in keeping with the intended use.

Seat cushion with acceptable damping

When it comes to padding, the Gobik Lancer relies on Elastic Interface's many years of experience. Good: The padding extends almost to the edge without any gradation. A channel in the centre relieves pressure on the perineal area when seated. For the intended area of use, however, the padding could be a little thicker to minimise sagging over long distances.

Excellent fit, maximum comfort

The Gobik feels extremely comfortable as soon as you slip them on. You have to like the long legs, but they fit without squeezing or pinching. The seams are skilfully positioned on the back of the thighs and cannot be felt. The material is pleasantly stretchy without being constricting.

The same applies to the straps, which can be pulled neatly over the shoulders without rolling in and hold the trousers and padding well in place. The Gobik Lancer is cut slightly higher at the waist, so that you feel well wrapped up.

If criticism is appropriate at all, the rubberised leg cuffs could be criticised at most. The small silicone dots offer a little less grip and so the long legs slip slightly upwards when pedalling.

Evaluation & conclusion

Great race bib shorts with an excellent cut and high wearing comfort. Only the padding could be firmerPhoto: Stefan FreyGreat race bib shorts with an excellent cut and high wearing comfort. Only the padding could be firmer

The Gobik Lancer has an excellent cut and top workmanship. It has very few, inconspicuous seams and wide, pleasantly taut straps. The leg cuffs fit almost perfectly, slipping only minimally when pedalling. The upper body is comfortably enclosed up to above the navel. The long trouser legs, which you have to like, are striking. The seat pad provides good cushioning, but is not really a long-distance pad.
