The new Gore Lupra jacket is comfortable to wear and cuts a fine figure thanks to its pleasant fit, especially on trail adventures by bike. However, the rain protection is limited.

The new Lupra jacket from Gore Wear was developed for cycling, but is also a well-fitting companion on the way through the city - large reflective bands ensure visibility - or on the march to the summit. The sleeves and cuffs are pleasantly stretchy, the hood can be adjusted and fits both over and under a helmet. Two slash pockets can hold some luggage, but quickly bulge out at the front when in a cycling position.

The Gore Lupra is a hybrid jacket: the upper arms, chest and hood are waterproof, the rest of the jacket is only windproof. At first glance, this combination seems clever, but as soon as you get caught in the first rain shower, you'll be annoyed by water soaking through the sleeves and a wet back, while on longer climbs you'll be annoyed by the heat build-up on your upper body.

It seems as if the Lupra jacket can't quite decide what it wants to be. It is no substitute for either a thicker rain jacket or a lighter and more breathable windbreaker and unfortunately remains a garment for a few occasions.

Stefan Frey, BIKE test editor: "The Lupra jacket fits great, but is neither fish nor fowl and somehow not the optimal solution for any occasion. If it's the only option in your luggage, you'll soon be standing in the rain."
