Rain jackets: 18 models for men and women put to the test
Whether the biker gets soaked in the rain depends on the vapour permeability of the membrane. In the test, 18 jackets had to show whether the balancing act between breathability and waterproofness was successful.

Water vapour-permeable functional membranes are designed to prevent the space under bikers' jackets from mutating into a damp biotope. Millions of micropores in the membrane act as a drain valve for excess sweat. They ensure that perspiration can escape from the body to the outside, but at the same time keep water flowing in from the outside to prevent renewed flooding.

Keep rain out and transport sweat to the outside

We wanted to know how well this principle works in current rain jackets and invited people to test it. The requirement was that the jackets had to withstand a water column of at least 4000 millimetres. 13 manufacturers took up the challenge. The total of 18 test models consisted of twelve men's and six women's jackets. The prices vary considerably. The Packabel Stormshell from Bontrager costs a wallet-friendly 80 euros. The top features of the Mavic Stratos H2O cost a whopping 300 euros. Whether cheap or expensive, all jackets had to prove themselves in the same test procedure.
