Mountain bikers know the problem: sudden rain showers can put an end to any tour. The Patagonia Dirt Roamer Storm Jacket promises a remedy with complete waterproofness and breathability at the same time. The American company relies on proven H2No technology combined with MTB-specific details. The jacket weighs 343 grams and can be stowed compactly - either in its own back pocket or rolled up into the hood. The construction follows the normal cut without an excessively wide fit.

Patagonia Dirt Roamer Storm Jacket: H2No technology meets recycled material

The outer material consists of a 3-layer laminate with fabric made from 100 per cent recycled nylon. The DWR waterproofing does not use PFAS and is designed to be permanently water-repellent. A soft knitted inside made from recycled polyester prevents the skin from feeling clammy.

Reinforcements protect particularly stressed areas. These inserts are also made from 100 per cent recycled nylon and are laminated to a polyester circular knit inner material. The choice of material is aimed at durability combined with stretchability.

Construction details for MTB

The 3/4-length two-way front zip is designed to provide a slim fit at the waist and ventilation from below. Side zips offer additional ventilation options and are designed to help you put on and take off your helmet. In practice, however, it is better to take the helmet off when slipping it on, as this is much easier. The helmet-compatible hood can be adjusted with a drawstring and provides a clear view to the sides. When not in use, it disappears under a Velcro fastener. The rather wide and long sleeves can be adjusted at the cuffs with Velcro.

How do you like this article?
The sustainable and fair production as well as the good features speak in favour of the Patagonia. The entry without a full-length zip is special, and the fit is tailored more for multi-sport use than for riding.

Conclusion on the Patagonia rain jacket

Conclusion: The Dirt Roamer has little to do with a bike-specific cut. The slip-on jacket is very large and wide - the material even flutters on the sleeves. The hood fits well over the helmet, but flutters when not in use. The sleeves ride up a little when moving. The Patagonia can be ventilated at the sides and chest, ensuring a pleasant climate. Overall, the feel of the material is quite pleasant and not very sweaty. Despite the high weight, the jacket can be stowed away quite compactly in the integrated pack bag.

As a slip-on jacket, the Patagonia does not have a full-length zip, which of course makes it difficult to put on with a helmetPhoto: Georg GrieshaberAs a slip-on jacket, the Patagonia does not have a full-length zip, which of course makes it difficult to put on with a helmet
