Resting sweaty on a draughty summit? Or cooling down on the long descent of a marathon? A wind jacket has saved the day for many a biker. Whether super light or with extra weather protection - we tested twelve models. Our test shows what the Gonso Road Jacket wind jacket can do against the wind.
Gonso's spartan wind jacket is only just over the 100 gram mark. The jacket can be stowed away in a correspondingly small space. It's a shame that there's no pouch to pack it into. The rest of the features are also straightforward: two-way zip, lightly lined collar and mesh on the back and under the arms for ventilation - that's it. There are no extras at this weight.
Thanks to the large mesh panels, the Gonso wind jacket protects against the wind, especially at the front. Sweat can evaporate well at the back, but this also means that the jacket is a little more draughty on fast descents. The Gonso only repels rain to a limited extent. Splash water can also penetrate the back.
By Gonso standards, the Road Jacket Wind has a surprisingly sporty cut and is consistently trimmed for a race-orientated position. The front is kept very short, which looks a little strange when stationary, but fits all the better on the bike. Although the Gonso wind jacket is slightly longer at the back, it is also rather short in comparison. Even if the material does rustle a little, it is still very comfortable to wear as long as you don't sweat too much. Then the windbreaker lacks airier material on the underside of the arms and sweat builds up a little. The collar with its comfortable lamination fits snugly and closes high enough so that it doesn't blow into the neck even when riding fast. Because Gonso has chosen a material without stretch, the jacket can be a little tight, especially in the crook of the arm. Otherwise: a successful cut for racers.
The smooth zip can be easily operated with one hand. Thanks to the stretchy cuffs, it can also be put on and taken off while riding if necessary. The only thing we would have liked to see in a wind jacket in this category is a stowage option or a pannier.
Gonso is breaking new ground and tailoring a body-hugging, racy wind jacket with a small pack size and low weight. Large mesh inserts under the armpits and on the back improve the climate. Only the sleeves quickly become sweaty at high intensity. The Road Jacket is almost a little too short, and the collar could be even higher. A little stretch would improve the fit and a pack sack would make it easier to stow away.
