Jack Wolfskin presents new, sustainable bike clothing with the Bike Commute Mono Jacket. The special feature: the main part is made from a single material. This means that the bike jacket can be easily recycled.

The new Jack Wolfskin jacket is designed to make urban cycling more comfortable by protecting against wind and weather. The bike commuter jacket will be available from spring 2023. With an extended back section and long sleeves, the jacket from the outdoor giant is cut specifically for cycling, but its casual look also makes it multifunctional.

Jack Wolfskin uses recycled and reusable materials in its new Commuter bike jacket to minimise environmental impact and pollution. Creating a closed material cycle is an important sustainability goal for the clothing industry - Jack Wolfskin included.

Sustainability: What is a closed material cycle?

In a closed material cycle, discarded products or offcuts are recycled and reused for future products. In sorting plants, products that only consist of a single material can be easily categorised and recycled. This closes the cycle and new products can be created from the raw material. Fewer fossil resources are required.

Challenges of a closed material cycle

One major challenge of a closed material cycle is the different materials and mixed fabrics in a single product, which cannot be separated by type. To get away from this, the entire product life cycle must be analysed and rethought. This process extends from design to material development and production through to disposal.

The Jack Wolfskin Bike Commute Mono Jacket

The majority of the jacket is made from a single material, namely polyester. At the end of the jacket's service life, the material can be completely recycled. Before this, the zips must be cut out and reflective elements removed.

Jack Wolfskin does not want to accept any loss of quality through recycling. That's why the Bike Commute Mono Jacket is constructed as follows:

The 3-layer Texapore Ecosphere outer material is made entirely from recycled polyester. Underneath is a waterproof and breathable membrane made from offcuts from the manufacturing process. This means that these are fed back into the production cycle and waste is reduced. The outer and inner layers of the jacket material are made from recycled PET bottles. The membrane, outer and inner layers are glued together. This adhesive consists of 80 per cent recycled polyester.
