At Eurobike, Jack Wolfskin presented the Bike Commute 2.5L Jkt, a new cycling jacket made largely from used clothing and textile waste. The jacket was honoured with a Eurobike Award for this sustainable manufacturing process.

The Jack Wolfskin Bike Commute 2.5L Jkt W cycling jacket is equipped with many bike-specific, well thought-out details. Jack Wolfskin uses a new production method, the textile-to-textile process, especially for the material used. This process is intended to be the first step towards a future closed-loop system.

Zero waste for a sustainable manufacturing process

The outer material is made from worn clothing and textile waste and is recyclable. The jacket's membrane is made from offcuts from the production process and returned to the production cycle - a zero-waste concept.

The Eurobike jury explains why it gave the award to the Jack Wolfskin cycling jacket as follows:

With the Bike Commute 2.5L Jkt W rain jacket, outdoor specialist Jack Wolfskin combines maximum comfort, sophisticated functionality and chic, timeless aesthetics with sustainability. To achieve this, the manufacturer does not rely on textiles made from recycled PET bottles, but goes a big step further by using recycled materials that will enable a closed material cycle in the future. The Bike Commute 2.5L Jkt W rain jacket is an exemplary and contemporary zero-waste strategy that has been translated into a highly attractive product.

A cycle in 10 steps: how the Textile to Textile recycling system works

  1. Used polyester textiles and polyester offcuts from the clothing manufacturing process are processed. These have a short delivery route as they come from the same region.
  2. Zips, buttons and Velcro fasteners are removed from the textiles to be recycled before the recycling process.
  3. A chemical recycling process produces PET granulate. This is the basic material for the production of polyester yarn.
  4. The colourants were separated out during the recycling process. In terms of its properties, the material is comparable to conventional, non-recycled granulate.
  5. Any polyester yarns can be spun from the granulate.
  6. The yarns are processed into the desired fabrics and can be dyed in any colour.
  7. The new fabric created from recycled textiles is certified in accordance with the Global Recycled Standard (GRS).
  8. The recycled material is indistinguishable from a non-recycled material in terms of its properties and feel.
  9. New Jack Wolfskin products are created from the recycled fabrics.
  10. A genuine textile cycle is created and the use of crude oil-based polyester is reduced.
