It's impressive how many niches the sports market fills: Instead of one type of cycling shoe for clipless pedals, there are shoes for Alpine crossers, cross-country riders, gravel bikers, cycle travellers, racing cyclists and many more. Specialised sunglasses can be found for golfers, sailors, aviators, mountaineers, bikers, anglers, paddlers, convertible drivers - and that's not all. It's the same with rain jackets. Manufacturers offer the right weather protection for every activity. Do we have to? Do we have to do this to our bank account, the environment and our wardrobe, or is a single waterproof jacket with a movement-friendly cut that packs down small in the rucksack not enough for occasional protection from the wet?
Our test sample request to the manufacturers was aimed precisely in this direction. We wanted a lightweight, versatile jacket for bad weather. Area of application: Bike plus X. A small packable rain jacket for the office bag and the Transalp rucksack, always with you and ready for use when you really need it.
Accordingly, three of the models originate from the cycling sector between mountain bikes and everyday bikes, while the rest were designed for other mountain and outdoor disciplines. There are many parallels between models for cyclists and those for high-movement mountain sports with light luggage.
Why not free of charge? Because quality journalism has a price. In return, we guarantee independence and objectivity. This applies in particular to the tests in BIKE. We don't pay for them, but the opposite is the case: we charge for them, namely tens of thousands of euros every year.
