The economy Storck: The entry-level Storck "Rebel" is available from just 1448 euros. (BIKE 8/2006)

Storck shows how to convert a proven race hardtail into an all-round hardtail with its affordable "Rebel". The only thing that has been omitted is a head tube with an integrated headset and the more complex and expensive smooth-weld seams. This reduces the price of the frame from 899 euros to 549 euros. In the Internet configurator, we then click on the "Comp" equipment and there it is in front of us: the most affordable Storck hardtail.

The first thing we notice when checking the Rebel in the lab is the geometry. It doesn't differ at all from the "Rebel Race", the more expensive race version. This raises the question: Is it possible to convert a hardtail with race geometry into an all-mountain bike using only add-on parts? Because the Storck is built like a comfortable touring hardtail. Manitou's long-travel fork with 120 millimetres of travel classifies it for this category.

So I sat up and went for a test ride. It's nice to sit comfortably upright and relaxed. But the Storck has a very high front end. The long fork and the high "VRO" stem from Syntace shift the centre of gravity to the rear. This is particularly noticeable on fast, twisty descents - there is too little pressure on the front wheel. In tight bends, the "Rebel" also tends to tip over in this position. So lower the stem, remove the spacers and start again from the front. Although you now sit a little more stretched out on the bike, the control is much better.

On the other hand, there are no complaints about the equipment: Shimano's "LX" full groupset and grippy "Little Albert" tyres are top notch. Only the fork without external rebound adjustment and with steel springs is no longer up to date. The "Rebel" would have won even more laurels with a favourable race set-up.
