The top model from Specialized's "Epic" range has been doing the rounds of the racing circuit since 2003. It celebrated World Cup successes with Christoph Sauser (marathon world championship title) and has won the hearts of many amateur marathon riders. As a status symbol, the "Epic" in the "S-Works" luxury version tested is perfectly suited. There is nothing to complain about in terms of handling. The first time you sit on it, you realise that racing and wellness are perfectly compatible: Cockpit, grips, saddle - simply perfect and visually integrated into the overall picture. "Excellent riding position", say the testers, who all praise the power transmission and good control. If you choose the "Epic", you get a chassis with plenty of suspension travel and the unique "Brain" adjustment at the rear. The adjustment range is large. Racers close the knob for a high breakaway torque, while the fork and rear work harmoniously and sensitively in the fully open position. For 6,500 euros you have to expect the highest quality and you will not be disappointed. The lightweight wheels allow you to get up to speed quickly and the bike is suitable for long distances thanks to two bottle cage positions. Only the narrow Specialized tyres, which only offer a small limit range, were not really to the liking of any of the test riders. In a direct comparison, the chassis weight and stiffness are behind some new developments. Despite its age, the "Epic" is still one of the best bikes for sporty use!
CONCLUSIONStatus symbols cost money: The "Epic S-Works" is outrageously expensive, but offers foolproof handling and a very wide range of use.
TUNING TIP: Fit wider tyres.
