Specialised Epic 29 (2010 model)
Great riding characteristics, a chassis that feels like more suspension travel. Attention: not available until 2010.

Specialized will only be launching the Epic marathon racer in 29-inch format in 2010. Because the bike is exciting, we have quickly integrated and tested a 2010 pre-production bike here. The Epic Marathon model shown here is only available in the USA. In Germany, the Epic Comp will be launched in white with a slightly different spec. Both bikes offer the basic features such as aluminium frame, geometry, Brain suspension and Rock Shox fork with butted carbon steerer tube. The equipment in the data box on the right refers to the Comp model, which will cost around 2700 euros.

The pre-production Epic impresses with its pleasant handling, you quickly get used to it and gain confidence in the large wheels. Both uphill and downhill, the advantages of the 29er concept, coupled with a powerful chassis, come into play. Downhill, the safety is surprising, although the measured suspension travel on paper doesn't exactly look like a flight of fancy. The riding position is suitable for long distances, but racer testers say: not sporty enough. Overall, the "giant Epic" leaves an all-round successful impression, a bike for (almost) every area of use.
