Until now, the KTM top versions of the Scarp and Myroon race bikes had the additional designation Prestige, but for 2017 the Austrians are expanding their portfolio and introducing the Sonic line as the new non-plus-ultra for race bikers.
The developers at KTM are not content with simply bolting the new Sram Eagle groupset, a Fox Step-Cast fork and DT Swiss carbon wheels onto the bikes and, of course, adjusting the price tag accordingly. For the Myroon Sonic 29", the Austrians have baked their lightest carbon frame to date. It weighs just 1090 grams. According to KTM, this represents a 15% weight saving compared to its predecessor. This is made possible by a sophisticated mix of the finest carbon fibres and, of course, their targeted arrangement in the frame. From 2017, the company will also be using Boost on the rear triangle, which is claimed to have increased stiffness by a full 21%.
As mentioned above, the Myroon Sonic 29" is equipped only with selected parts. Gearing is provided by the new Eagle 12-speed groupset. Lightweight DT Swiss carbon wheels should secure first place in the sprint classification and the extremely light Fox Step-Cast fork should provide the necessary comfort. The total weight of the Myroon Sonic should be just 8.1 kilos and the price 7000 euros.
Unlike the Myroon, where the new carbon layup is only reserved for the top model, all Scarp models feature the new carbon fibre concept. KTM is also pursuing the so-called straight-line link concept for the 2017 model, which is intended to absorb the forces from the shock more directly. The manufacturer has dispensed with a link at the rear dropout and instead relies on flexing seat stays. This should bring advantages in terms of stiffness and still result in sensitive response behaviour.
The equipment of the Scarp Sonic 29" is identical to that of the Myroon and is supplemented by Ritchey Super Logic components. Thus equipped, the Scarp weighs in at a slim 9.1 kilos. The price for this thoroughbred race bike: 8000 euros.
