Cannondale's system integration really comes through on the scales: lightest frame, light wheels, light and stiff fork. Around eleven kilos is a top value for a 29er fully, and unlike the 26-inch Scalpel, the 29er is actually a fully and not a softtail. Thanks to the pivot point at the bottom bracket, it has decent kinematics and sufficient suspension travel. The bottom line is that the Scalpel 29 is the better Scalpel. The racy character is retained. You sit in a very sporty position with a high saddle rake, which encourages you to go uphill at high speed. At the same time, you're happy about the low weight - top score of six points. However, the 26/36 gearing is too firm for weak legs, and the rear end works a lot in the large leaf. Downhill, the stiff fork ensures high steering precision and good control, the suspension is, as expected, firm, but we utilised the suspension travel to the full.
ConclusionThe new 29er Scalpel is a fine racing machine. Low weight, very good riding characteristics, great riding fun.
