The simple appearance belies the bike's capabilities. The aluminium frame has a thru-axle, SAG indicator and individual tube shapes. The chassis is characterised by high stiffness and below-average weight. The long, sporty geometry is pleasing, the Fourstroke is one of the best uphill bikes and can be controlled very well downhill thanks to the wide cockpit. Reader tester Stefan also attests to the bike's "balanced handling uphill" and a "high sense of safety downhill" - his number one. You don't need to adjust anything on the suspension, the RockShox components harmonise well. However, when pedalling out of the saddle, the VPP rear suspension is affected by the drive (unround pedalling). The spec is also good: Shimano SLX groupset and brakes with XT Shadow Plus rear derailleur - that's all you need. However, like most of its competitors, tester Stefan is missing a real mountain gear. At 24-36, those with normal training are at the limit.
Conclusion: The Fourstroke 29er is still a harmonious bike that is great fun to ride. Price and performance are right.
PLUS Confident handling, stiff chassis, comfortable saddle, wide range of use, Shadow Plus rear derailleur
MINUS Only three frame sizes
The alternative
The carbon frame of the FS02 saves around half a kilo, plus XT equipment, Fox suspension and DT Swiss wheels. However, you have to invest 900 euros more - the bike costs 3499 euros.
