Which MTB tyre fits which rim?
What does the actual width of MTB tyres depend on or how do I determine the right rim width? Our expert provides information.

Question from BIKE reader Stephan A.: "I read the wheel test with great interest. What surprises me: Is there a correlation between the inner rim width and the maximum permitted/recommended tyre width? While Spank and Sun-Ringlé rims (18.3 and only 18 mm respectively) can be ridden with tyre widths of 2.35, Tune only allows 2.2 inch wide tyres with a rim width of 21.4 mm. What does the actual possible width depend on? Or to put it another way: I want to run widths of 2.4, what rim width do I need?

Answer from Dipl. Ing. Stephan Ottmar: The manufacturers obviously have different recommendations, which you should follow if you don't want to jeopardise your warranty. Based on our experience, we recommend 2.4 inch wide tyres with a rim width of 20 millimetres or more, which can also withstand hard use.

The inner width of the rim determines which tyre width can be used, or may be used according to the manufacturer's specifications. The manufacturers' approvals are not standardised. For safety reasons, you should not ride wide tyres on a rim that is too narrow.Photo: Georg Grieshaber The inner width of the rim determines which tyre width can be used, or may be used according to the manufacturer's specifications.
