Tyre combination for marathon races
With an annual mileage of 10,000 km on various marathons, tyres are put under extreme strain. BIKE test manager Christoph Listmann tells us what is important.

Question from Erich W.: I urgently need some expert advice on tyres. I ride about 10,000 km a year, including various marathons. For the races, I ride Schwalbe Rocket Ron tyres at the front and Racing Ralph tyres at the rear, air pressure approx. 1.8 bar, both in 2.1 inch. Is this the right combination for me?

BIKE test manager Christoph Listmann: Hi Erich, congratulations, 10,000 kilometres is a great annual performance! In my opinion, the Rocket Ron front tyre in 2.1 inch is not ideal on gravel or wet surfaces. However, it works well on softer surfaces. For me, 2.1" would be too narrow overall, I would change to 2.2", which offers more grip and safety. You can try 2.2" wide Continental X-King tyres with Michelin latex tubes when you next change tyres; some pros ride this combination in competitions and training.
