Schwalbe is revamping its flagship touring tyre: the new Marathon Almotion is set to become the benchmark in the trekking and touring sector. With a completely new tread pattern, reduced weight and, for the first time, a tubeless-compatible PRO version, the long-established manufacturer demonstrates how a classic can be further developed.

Editor’s conclusion

The new Marathon Almotion tyre seems well thought out; the tubeless capability of the PRO version is long overdue for tech enthusiasts and broadens the range of uses. What’s more, the tyre is said to be lightweight yet very sturdy. The long-term test will reveal whether this balancing act between weight and robustness works in practice. The price of the PRO version is ambitious. The standard version remains a solid choice for anyone who prefers tried-and-tested options.

A new profile, tried-and-tested strengths

The Almotion combines the strengths typically associated with marathon tyres – durability, puncture resistance and reliability – with a sportier feel. So it’s a bit like, such as the Marathon Efficiency (reviewed here). This completely new tyre features a solid centre rib for a smooth ride and a long service life. The high-grip outer blocks provide traction in wet conditions and are designed to perform well even off the beaten track. One thing is clear, however: you shouldn’t take the Marathon Almotion too far off-road, given its moderate tread pattern.

PRO version: This is where it gets exciting

The PRO version is sure to appeal to performance enthusiasts. Here, Schwalbe combines the puncture- and tear-resistant V-Guard puncture protection belt with a Race-PRO construction – meaning minimal rolling resistance whilst maintaining high load-bearing capacity. The aim is to strike a balance between light weight and puncture protection through a particularly clever choice of materials.

The highlight: for the first time, a Schwalbe Marathon touring tyre is available in the Almotion PRO tubeless-ready version. If you use sealant, you’ll enjoy even lower rolling resistance. Minor punctures are repaired directly by the sealant. A practical bonus: the tyre is now also compatible with modern hookless rims – an important step for anyone using the latest wheelsets. Of course, the slightly greater effort required for fitting and maintenance remains a drawback of tubeless tyre fitting.

ADDIX Race meets Fair Rubber

For the rubber compound, Schwalbe has opted for ADDIX Race – the fastest compound in its range. It promises very low rolling resistance combined with excellent grip and control on the road. Schwalbe manufactures all its PRO tyres using fair-trade natural rubber (Fair Rubber).

RRP for the PRO version: 78.90 euros – not exactly a bargain, but within the usual range for a high-end touring tyre with tubeless capability. The street price usually settles at a slightly lower level.

Standard version for pragmatists

If you prefer a classic tyre, go for the standard version with the RaceGuard puncture protection belt and the ADDIX Green rubber compound. This offers durability, low wear and optimal rolling resistance – and is also Schwalbe’s most environmentally friendly compound (incorporating, amongst other things, recycled carbon black from the company’s own tyre recycling programme).

This version is available as a clincher tyre and, at a RRP of 41.90 euros, is significantly cheaper than the PRO version. A solid choice for everyday cyclists and touring cyclists looking for reliable puncture protection without premium features such as tubeless compatibility.

Tyre width and e-bike approval

Both versions have ECE-R75 (E-50) approval and are therefore also authorised for use on S-pedelecs and for total loads of up to 150 kilograms. Reflective strips on the sidewall are fitted as standard. The range of sizes is extensive. Both tyres are available in 28-inch sizes, ranging from 40 to 55 (1.5 to 2.15 inches) in width, in 5-millimetre increments. They are also available in 27.5 x 2.15 inches, i.e. 55 millimetres in width.
