Wide plus-size MTB tyres increase grip and comfort. They also don't sink in as deeply in the snow. And what's right for the bike can't be wrong for the bike trailer.

Burley is picking up on the current trend of extra-wide plus tyres and offers retrofit wheels for its bicycle trailers to suit your off-road adventure tour. The wheel set with 16x3 inch wide tyres in Plus format is simply fitted to the trailer in place of the standard wheels using a quick-release fastener with push button.

The advantages of wide tyres with a lug pattern are the same as for bikes: Plus tyres with correspondingly wide rims can be ridden with less air pressure due to their larger volume and the same puncture resistance. They therefore offer a larger contact area and greater riding comfort than narrow tyres, which are ridden with more air pressure.

The larger contact area of the tyres increases grip and thus reduces the risk of the cargo or child trailer and its valuable cargo slipping or rolling. In addition, the wide tyres float better on snow (or sand), roll over obstacles more easily thanks to the low air pressure and pass on fewer impacts to the passengers.

The 16+ wheel set is compatible with Burley child trailers as well as the Flatbed and Nomad cargo trailers. Theoretically, the wheels could also fit other manufacturers that have the same quick-release hub with push button. However, according to the manufacturer, this has not been tested/researched and is not recommended by Burley. Cost of the tyre set: 199 euros RRP. The ski kit shown above is intended less for cycling than for touring on foot, snowshoes or cross-country skis and costs 249 euros at Burley. Further information on www.burley.com.

Sebastian Brust was born in 1979 and was originally socialised on his grandmother's folding bike, but has mainly been riding studded tyres since his fifth birthday. Loves all kinds of bikes - and merging with nature. Believes that disc brakes are much safer today than they were 15 years ago and thinks he has helped with his brake and pad tests. However, the trained vehicle technology engineer very much regrets that the bicycle industry is orientating itself on what he considers to be the wrong ideals of the car industry. At BIKE, he corrects, produces and organises digital content on the website.
