Schwalbe already has a whole myriad of gravel tyres in its range. It all started with the G-One. The tyre is now available as semi-slick or with extra high studs, for racers or as an affordable entry-level model. What they all have in common is that durability is not at the top of the list of priorities.
For our test of touring tyres, we therefore chose the new G-One Overland Pro, which, in addition to high versatility and of course fast rolling, also has high durability in the specification. It is intended to be THE fast tyre for frequent riders and gravel tourers. Schwalbe has opted for a narrow triangular tread pattern on a kind of centre bar, combined with a fine mini tread pattern on the shoulders and only slightly coarser blocks on the very outside for additional traction when leaning.
Given the closed tread pattern, it's no surprise: But the Overland Pro really picks up speed on the road and is virtually on a par with a classic G-One Allround in terms of rolling resistance. It even puts conventional Marathon touring tyres in the shade - tubeless is even better. After a short test, we are unable to correctly assess the durability of the tyre. The cheaper Overland 365 (tested here) with the same tread pattern actually lasts a very long time and has hardly shown any signs of wear after more than 1000 kilometres.
Small disadvantage. On tarmac, the Overland Pro sings audibly despite its fine profile. On the other hand, the Schwalbe impresses with good damping and high cut resistance, especially considering its low weight. The Overland is also in its element on fine gravel. Coarse gravel and fast corners on grass or mud, however, push the Overland to its limits. No wonder, after all, no tyre can do everything.
With dense, large tread blocks in the centre, the Overland should clearly outshine the durability of classic gravel tyres. Rolling resistance, weight and puncture protection justify the high price. The outer lugs offer additional cornering grip without overly hard transitions. Our sports tip. - Adrian Kaether, Editor Test & Technology
