The new carcass is called EMC (E-Mountain Casing) and, according to Kenda, is the first tyre to be developed for the special requirements of e-mountain bikes. Thanks to a reinforced layer of woven fibres and additional puncture protection under the tread, the new tyres should not only be more durable, but also offer more grip and control than standard tyres. Although we do not yet have any official weights, according to Kenda the e-bike tyres should be relatively light. All EMC tyres can be fitted tubeless and are "ECE 75R" certified - i.e. officially approved for fast pedelecs up to 45 km/h.
The increased weight of e-mountainbikes and the high torque of the motor put a lot of strain on the tyres. The harder and more durable EMC carcass offers more control, better handling and better puncture protection than "normal" mountain bike tyres. On the Eurobike 2016 Kenda will present three tyres with the EMC carcass, which are intended to reach different target groups:
According to Kenda, more e-mountain bikes will roll on wide plus tyres in the future. That's why the Havoc comes in both 2.8 and 3.0 inch widths. The larger volume ensures a larger contact area and therefore more traction, control and comfort. The low profile of the centre lugs (60 shore) rolls quickly over the trails, while the side lugs (50 shore) should find grip on almost any surface.
The already familiar Honey Badger, which was tested in BIKE 7/16, will also be available with the new casing in 27.5 inch and 2.4 inch width. The triangular lugs (50 Shore) on the tread ensure low rolling resistance and open up when braking for even more traction. The aggressive side lugs really bite into the ground and allow high cornering speeds. Thanks to the EMC version in the Honey Badger line, downhill-orientated e-mountain bikers such as Kenda athlete Guido Tschugg can now also benefit from the qualities of the Honey Badger and the advantages of the EMC casing.
The Nevegal X Pro EMC is a classic all-mountain tyre. The centre knobs (60 Shore) give the tyre low rolling resistance and a long service life. The softer shoulder lugs (50 Shore), on the other hand, grip the ground securely and can also be manoeuvred safely over wet and stony ground. Touring riders in particular will find it a suitable tyre.
