Exclusive: Schwalbe Eddy Current in a short test
With the Eddy Current, Schwalbe is the first tyre manufacturer to present a model that has been developed explicitly and exclusively for e-mountain bikes.

What makes this tyre a specialist? A stable carcass (Super Gravity) for a lot of puncture protection, a massive tread for a lot of grip, an extremely large amount of rubber for a long service life. In other words: Schwalbe makes no compromises and prioritises the weight factor. There are different profiles for the front and rear wheels, as the two tyres also perform different tasks. That makes sense.

The massive Eddy Current looks like a motocross tyre and weighs 1409 grams (rear, 27.5 x 2.8) or 1306 grams (front, 29 x 2.4), which is downhill tyre level. On the trail, the tyres impress with very good-natured handling and strong traction. This provides a lot of security on rough terrain, and the maximum can be utilised on steep ramps. On tame trails that require more playful handling, the very high weight is counterproductive. Compared to an averagely light E-MTB tyre (950 gram class), the handling of the Eddy Current is more sluggish. This is just as noticeable when changing corners quickly as when jumping. Schwalbe has explicitly designed its specialist for the MX wheel mix, i.e. a narrower 29er front tyre in combination with a 27.5 x 2.8 inch rear tyre. We also tested the Eddy Current in this version. Of course, the tyre can also be ridden on normal 29ers or 27.5-inch bikes. Available in 27.5 x 2.8, 29 x 2.6 and 29 x 2.4.

Florentin Vesenbeckh has been on a mountain bike since he was ten years old. Even on his very first tour, he focussed on single trails - and even after more than 30 years in the saddle of an MTB, these are still the quintessence of biking for him. He spent his youth competing in various bike disciplines and later his cycling career was characterised by years as a riding technique coach. Professionally, the experienced test editor now focusses on e-mountainbikes. In recent years, the qualified sports scientist and trained journalist has tested over 300 bikes and more than 40 different motor systems in the laboratory and in practice.
