The E-Thirteen TRS enduro tyre is upgraded on the inside. Already in our Tyre test from BIKE 7/2016 the then first E-Thirteen tyre combination consisting of the TRS Race with triple compound (front) and the TRS Plus with dual compound (rear) impressed with its very high cornering grip and massive traction. The tread design responsible for this and the sticky rubber compounds were retained for the 2018 vintage. Grip and damping should of course remain at least as high - whether in dry or wet conditions.
Little has changed in the external appearance of the tyre. Only the fine sipes on the prominent outer lugs are noticeable on closer inspection. They are intended to give the lugs greater flexibility so that they can also cling to the steepest slopes. The 2018 versions should therefore surpass the already high friction values.
In terms of stability, puncture protection and rolling resistance, E-Thirteen has made improvements in precisely those areas where we had to criticise the first generation. The sidewall reinforced with a support layer (Apex) is intended to increase puncture protection, keep the tyre more dimensionally stable even during hard braking and steering manoeuvres and at the same time ensure lower rolling resistance. So far, the rolling characteristics of the estate have been rather mediocre.
The tread is designed to achieve better puncture resistance with a thicker rubber layer. In the Race models, additional aramid fibres in the sidewall fend off sharp rock edges and at the same time ensure that the tyres are more airtight.
More material used for greater robustness, which unfortunately means higher weight in this case. The weight differences between the Race and Plus versions are relativised, with the somewhat simpler TRS Plus in particular gaining disproportionately. At 990 g (27.5 x 2.35", manufacturer's specification), it weighs a good 170 g more than the previous version. The aramid-reinforced Race model with extra-sticky outer lugs weighs 995 g in the same size, which is almost 100 g more.
For touring bikers, the 1.0 kg enduro tyres are almost too heavy. Enduro racers or e-mountain bikers can overlook the extra weight and appreciate the high grip and increased downhill resistance.
Also new and externally the same, but even more resistant: the LG1 tyre suitable for downhill use. With a two-layer carcass structure, it should guarantee even fewer punctures at high speeds and even greater dimensional stability at the same time.
The E-Thirteen TRS and LG1 tyres are each available as a Race or Plus version and in 27.5" or 29". All tyres are 2.35" wide and tubeless-ready. Prices and weights can be found in the following table:
