The new Hellkat from Kenda impressed us in our last Tyre test (BIKE 6/2017) impressed with "incredible cornering grip". However, the gravity version tested there, at just under 1170 grams, clearly falls through the trail and touring grid. At a good 800 grams, this tyre is also fun on technically demanding tours and fits perfectly on potent trail to enduro bikes. We were also completely impressed by the grip of the lightweight version. Kenda relies on a mix of two rubber compounds: a harder one on the centre lugs to improve running characteristics and durability, and a softer one on the side lugs for optimum cornering grip. Although the tread appears quite coarse, the Hellkat shines particularly well on hard and stony surfaces. In terms of cushioning, the lighter carcass naturally cannot keep up with the heavy Gravity version.
On the rear wheel, we rode the likewise new Nevegal 2 (785 grams), a recommended combination, as the Hellkat has somewhat tough running characteristics. With a somewhat tamer profile and better rolling resistance, the Nevegal 2 is a good addition - especially for trail and all-mountain bikers who mainly pedal uphill under their own steam. And how do the two thin-walled enduro candidates fare in terms of puncture protection?
There was a major setback on our very first ride: a puncture after just a few metres of trail. The bike survived the next 10,000 metres of descending without a defect, despite the roughest rocky terrain, potent enduro suspension and corresponding riding style. We are excited to see how the new Kendas perform in the next BIKE test and what values the lab test will reveal. Hellkat Pro and Nevegal 2 come in widths of 2.4 and 2.6 inches, for 27.5 and 29 inches respectively.
