A tyre for every surface?
After three years of development, the Norwegian start-up reTyre is launching tyres for bicycles on the market that can be changed in seconds using a zipper.

Adapting your bike to different seasons, different surfaces and almost any weather in just a few simple steps? What sounds a bit like a dream of the future could soon become reality. The idea behind reTyre is as simple as it is ingenious: using special skins in different designs, colours, materials and embedded technologies, cyclists should be able to adapt their tyres to changing conditions in a matter of seconds.

Armed for all eventualities?

For example, there are skins with spikes for better grip on ice and snow or "multi-purpose" skins with extra grip on uneven terrain. The basic tyre is called reTyre One and can also be used as a normal tyre without skins. The zipper is integrated into the sidewall of the base tyre and its fastening mechanism has been tested over many months to guarantee maximum safety.

Where can I buy the reTyre and how much does it cost?

The tyre and skins will soon be available for pre-order on retyre.no and Kickstarter. From July, reTyre will also be available in selected shops in Europe. Expansion into all European countries and North America is planned for 2019 - there are already collaborations with major bicycle brands and the company is looking for retailers worldwide.

The reTyre One with integrated zip is to be released as a standard type for 35.99 US dollars and as a premium type for 69.99 US dollars. The Urban Winter Skin with spikes will also cost 69.99 US dollars, while the All-Terrain Skin (off-road) will cost 54.99 US dollars. Further skins will then be available from 2019 - including a tyre with embedded electronics and LEDs that is capable of inductive charging and communicates with the smartphone.
